Professional Statement

I aspire to become an inter-disciplinary, empathic, skilled and evidence-based Speech Language Clinician upon entering the field.

Collaboration

It is crucial to become a collaborative member when being a Speech-Language Pathologist. We are responsible for participating in interprofessional practice and education to spread awareness of our scope of practice to other professionals. When providing services, it is important to team up with fellow speech language pathologists, as well as the other members of the multi-professional team of physicians, occupational and physical therapists, and other professionals that care for the client to provide the most beneficial care. It is important to be aware of my own weaknesses and knowing when to seek out help from other professionals to provide the most effective care. Providing the most effective care to my clients include continuously learning and staying up-to-date on the latest topics, approaches and interventions within the field.

Empathic

Being an empathetic clinician is crucial when providing services to my clients. The client’s goals and preferences should be at high priority when creating an individualized intervention plan in order to provide a high-quality care. As an individual who required a speech-language pathologist growing-up, I remember what it was like not having the ability to communicate and the emotions that came with that. My Speech-Language Pathologist was the person that gave me the hope and confidence to communicate and aspire to be that person for my own clients.

Evidence-Based

I want to partake in evidence-based practices to implement the most current intervention and treatment approaches. It is important to provide clients with cutting-edge intervention to provide them with the most beneficial outcomes. Evidence-based approaches should be individualized for each client, but also provide them the skills necessary for generalization outsides of the therapy session.
